Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you about a dangerous trend on TikTok that poses a significant risk to student safety and school property. This trend involves students inserting foreign objects, such as pencil graphite, gum wrappers, aluminum foil, paper clips and pushpins, into the USB or charging ports of their Chromebooks, intending to cause sparks or fires.
We understand that students may not fully grasp the seriousness of the consequences. Inserting foreign objects into Chromebooks can lead to:
- Short circuits
- Fires
- Damage to the device's battery (creating a hazard)
- The release of harmful fumes
To address this issue proactively, we ask for your assistance.
Please take the following actions:
- Closely monitor your student's Chromebook use.
- Talk to your student about the dangers of inserting foreign objects into their Chromebook. Explain that this can cause serious damage, injury, and fire.
- Emphasize that students are responsible for their assigned Chromebooks and any damage resulting from misuse. Chromebook conditions are reviewed annually.
Chromebooks are thoroughly reviewed annually prior to the start of summer. Students are responsible for any damage to their devices, and invoices will be sent home. Note that students receive the same device the following year. Proper care of these devices throughout your student's high school career is essential for completing assignments.
Engaging in this trend will have serious repercussions. Criminal charges may be pursued, and students will face significant consequences at school, including suspension or expulsion.
Please stress to your student the importance of using technology responsibly and the serious consequences of participating in this dangerous trend. We appreciate your partnership in ensuring student safety and the responsible use of school resources.
